Smoke the Weed- Snoop Lion

Smoke Weed Everyday is a lyrical part from the 2000 rap single “The Next Episode”by hip hop artists and producers Dr. Dre and Snoop Dogg. The phrase has gained usage in numerous image macros, music remixes and YouTube Poop Music Videos.

Media Representations

Who is being represented?n the rep- In what way? By whom? snoopdogg is being represented as a Rastafarian and the use of cannabis is also shown throughout the video. the subject has been represented this way because snoop dogg is known for smoking cannabis and supporting the cannabis community. since the music video is called "smoke the weed" the title clearly symbolises what the main subject is about (marijuana). the music video contains two main protagonists  American/Bermudian reggae artist known as "Collie buddz" who is also known for his famous song come around in which he also supports the idea of cannabis in the whole music video narrative.

The representation is fair as it shows to racial as snoopdogg  is black and collie buddzis white it really shows how the two artists can relate to the same topic as cannabis is a mind game for everyone who uses it. as collie buddz is a  American/Bermudian reggae artist his lyrics are Jamaican whereas snoop doggs lyrics are English. this challenges the stereotypes as well as collie buddz is white but he makes Jamaican music. This will also target different audiences. there is also some gender biased activity. throughout the video there is also a women who is smoking cannabis and getting high. this could suggest that snoop dogg is trying to aim this video towards females aswell.

The video also represents the effects of cannabis such as getting high. this is mainly the main reason why snoop dogg enjoys  cannabis and also wants to influence other people to smoke cannabis.
the split of both genders in the video is biased as they portray the main protagonists to be men and the females are portrayed to just be a iconic figure in the video. snoop doggs lyrics in the video support nature so this could mean that he dosent only represent bad representation but good ones as cannabis ios a natural product and he also mentions global warming. snoop dogg tells youngsters to look after the nature e.g dont litter we need these plants to grow so we can really enjoy getting high.

Media Languages and Forms
What are the denotative and connotative levels of meaning? The denotation in the music video is clearly the use of cannabis. by analysing the first couple of seconds of the music video the audience can clearly what the music video is going to be about e.g the title in the beginning basically explains what the entire video is going to be about. the connotation is obviously cannabis as nearly most of the shots isn the music video show the use of cannabis by different people

one of the main denotation and connotation is the cannabis plant. this is something that the audience can see visually and the idea of filming cannabis plants are clever as snoop doggs lyrics in the video support nature so this could mean the hes not on

What are the non-verbal structures of meaning in the text (e.g. gesture, facial expression, positional communication, clothing, props etc)? the non verbal structures in the video are mainly cannabis joints and smoking but also facial expression as the characters are portrayed to look high and drowsy withing the video this supports the idea of cannabis as it shows the overall effects. snoop dogg is dressed like a gangster  but also a Rastafarian as that his religion

Mise en scene

Lighting in the video is used the most as they really want to make the smoke stand out. as snoop dogg raps in a greyish background the use of light is used to make him stand out more so when he smokes a joint the light shines at the smoke making it stand out more. The music video is filmed in two location when collie buddz is represented hes in a town where there are a lot of youngsters smoking weed. there are also videos of the cannabis plant which could also be parts of the location and props. in the video they also show behind the scenes e.g the green screen and the lighting  and snoop dogg sitting on a table with the a female beside him. one of the main iconography is marijuana but also smoking joints and weed plants. these are shown secretly from the video. snoop dogg also advertiser his new product the G pen which is a weed vaporiser in which you just need to add the weed inside and the pen burns the weed for you. snoop dogg wants to promote his products that also could be the main reason why hes making this video about cannabis.

Narrative

The narrative is organised and structured well. it builds up to a dilemma and shows the outcome of consuming cannabis e.g the happiness the whole video involves the idea of getting high on cannabis. this video raises a lot of controversy as the chorus is "smoke the weed everyday" The audience is positioned to be part of the overall outcome as snoop dogg is directly telling the audience to smoke weed everyday not only that but we can relate it to the hypodermic needle model as snoop dogg is injecting youngsters with the idea that smoking cannabis everyday makes you a better person.

The video shows lots of lip syncing, this is essential for a music video because it shows the artist singing the song as it is being played, making it appear to be live. The video constantly references the lyrics throughout, this makes it earlier to follow along for the audience and makes it more memorable.

one of the main iconography in this video is the weed and the plant the plant really symbolises how the weed is presented in the video and it can really be distinguished and also can be identified by the audience.
snoop dogg also wears glasses this is a key convention as the glasses symbolise that he has stoner eyes which mean that his eyes are always stoned by the effects of weed. many reggae artists are known for wearing alot of glasses to represent the sensation of high they also do this to hide that fact that they are stoned.

Not every teenager engages in illegal behaviour or important parties. Women are represented as objects of the male gaze, which is a rather sexist view that radical modern media tries to avoid. Regardless of all of the negative ideas, the party within the music video is seen as a great and amazing event, even though it ends in damage and misconduct. The producers of this text may have added scenes of rebellion and immorality in order to create and keep interest or to present ways of life for some teenagers. Since this film was shown globally, media imperialism could apply here, as teenagers from other countries and cultures may imitate the apparent fun, but eventually negative behaviour they see. Teenagers are represented as the cause of problems, crime and corruption in society, which may be the case for certain individuals, but not for adolescents as a unit.

The genre thata this texts belongs to is reggae because its a remake of a old reggae song but they got som eideas from it and also made it more modernised. this helps with the idea of bringing back old music. this was a clever technique as many older people who were familiar with the old song could recognise the same rhythm so this might be a really effective solution. One of the main conventions of the text is probably the title as it explains it all. it clearly states "smoke the weed" this helps the audience to relate to the idea of the video and also we can relate it to the hypodermic model as the text is injecting thoughts into the audiences brain e.g smoke the weed will be printed in their brains.
The song is extremely controversial as it tells youngsters to smoke weed everyday.
the themes of the music video is set in a town where there are alot of gangs and people dealing drugs. this is good as it helps with the music video.

The characters are really determined because every character in the music video smokes weed so they really love the idea of making a music video. Snoop dogg is high everyday so he just loves his job. The audiences are not cheated by the text because the text clearly states "smoke the weed" I don't think the will cheat the audience. Snopp dogg says that he even smoked weed on set. So by this we can tell if he's honest or not. He said he acc got high while shooting the video.
Snoop dogg is strongly associated with the reggae genre as he was influenced with hiphop/reggae music since childhood not only that but he also converted to a Rastafarian because he loved it so much.

Media Audiences
The target audience for this movie consists of both male and females but is more appealing to males due to the iconography and the appeal of the male gaze as well as humour and the types of characters used in the music video. The demographics is C2DE and the psycho graphics of main streamers as the film is lowbrow and the majority of the audience would be able to relate to the characters in some way as they may want to be accepted within society such as the protagonist as well as experimenting with drugs.

Media institutions
Snoop Doggs Album reincarnated had a lot of criticism from the industry in order to market certain album cover as they seemed to be a bit too controversial. The media Industry's approach to snoop Doggs representation of cannabis is more acceptable nowadays because pretty much in every hip hop music video nowadays there is some representation of cannabis use. This has one become part of the overall hip hop/reggae vibe. Doggy style records were one his first in which he the most recognition and from that day on he was known as Snoop Dogg. DoggyStyle Records has officially re-opened its doors and already has a marquee artist on its roster. The company, which started in 1995, came to fruition after Snoop’s success on his 1993 album, DoggyStyle. It has been 20 years since the label produced music but this year Snoop is planning to change that.
